We installed the defrost thermostat and it seemed to do the trick. I'm not sure if there could be another problem or not. We put it on about 6 and a half hours ago and there ice trays aren't solid yet, there's a sheet of ice over the top and the ice maker hasn't produce any ice yet either. Could this mean there's something else wrong or should I just give it till morning and see if it's doing the job? After putting the defrost thermostat on the evaporator fan came on and it got cold in the fridge and freezer section quickly. Thanks for all your help.

Yes.
Also, make sure the appliance has been fully put back together. Proper air circulation across the icemaker is required for fastest ice harvesting.

Everything seems to be doing great. I consider my fridge fixed. At least if something else goes wrong I know where to come. Thanks a lot.

It was doing great for several days and now it's doing the practically the same thing again. It's like it's defrosting. It wasn't running at all and felt just barely cool inside both the freezer and refrigerator side. I turned the timer and it kicked back on and it cooling again. Do you think it could be the defrost timer? What's the odds of it going out about the same time as the defrost thermostat?

Mechanical timers 'sticking' is one of the more common types of failures they can suffer.

The repair man came over yesterday evening, he said I need a new refrigerator. The freon has leaked out I guess. I thought it would last more than 6 years, I more than likely won't ever by another Amana. Can we have a moment of silence? Oh well, thank you for all your help.

Did he not say exactly what the problem was??
Checking for an uneven frost pattern on the freezer's evaporator (cooling) coil should be done at the time of failure. That is one of the signs of a refrigeration system problem (not a defrost system problem) as is described that the previous like I supplied.
FAQ: My frost free refrigerator's fridge section is not cold enough. What might be the problem?

Depending on exactly what the problem was with the refrigeration system (leak, restriction, compressor not pumping, etc.), it could cost up to 1/2 the cost of a new refrigerator to repair if none of the refrigerator is covered under warranty.
BTW. Some makes and models of refrigerators may have up to a 10-year warranty (see the following link) on parts of the fridge's sealed system.

He just told me "you need a new refrigerator" and showed me where the coils in the freezer only had frost on them at the very top where the line connects into the coils. He said that it was only getting freon at the very top. I checked my warranty and it was only up to five years so I'm just out of luck. Thanks for your response.

Than I might be included to get a second opinion, one from an Amana *factory authorized* service depot (see the following link) if the first technician wasn't. But it's up to you.

There's still a good chance it might be most worthwhile to just replace it. :(
