We have a Kenmore series 80 washing machine which has started acting up recently. First, it would fill, agitate, but wouldn't drain (we could get it to drain by moving the dial over a hair and then it would complete the cycle). Second, it would fill, agitate, drain, but not refill to rinse. Now, the machine when set to start, won't fill, but when dial is moved ahead it will only engage for the final spin. This is true of all wash choices (delicates, permanent press, and normal). I don't think it's the lid switch because the spin will work with the lid up. Please help!

Sounds like there may be a problem in the timer. Often those timers have an inspection plate which will allow you to look inside it at the timer's contacts. If they're burnt or discolored, the timer likely needs to be replaced.

It shouldn't! (although it is not likely the cause of your complaint.)

If you have small children in the household the lid switch not activating could be a potential hazard. Last year in Montreal a small child had their arm torn off by a home washer which didn't stop when the lid was opened!!!

Thanks for the information. I wondered about the spin cycle working when the lid was up. No small children though. Is the timer a part that can be replaced? Or maybe cleaned by me? Thanks again,

** Is the timer a part that can be replaced? **

Yes. You can read what information is required to get replacement parts for your major home appliances in the 'Repair Parts' section of my site linked below.

** Or maybe cleaned by me? **

Cleaning timer contacts rarely works for long (if at all), especially on the types of timers used in the last 20 years. If the contacts are burnt, the timer should be replaced.
