You will either have to built something strong to fill in the surrounding area and support it or take it back and purchase one designed for the type of window you have.

In either case you may need a support bracket underneath it which are described at the following link:

I have a 70's Carrier window AC unit fitting into an enclosure with about .25" clearance; any thoughts on how to remove it? I've tried prying it out but it seems to be secured someplace.
