You must use a good primer. Just today I finished the second coat of primer on a varnished veneer dresser. It took two days for the first coat to adhere, the can said it might take up to 3. I used "Benjamin Moore Fresh Start All Purpose 100% Acrylic Primer." You don't even HAVE to sand first, although I did. It looks great so far.
