Looking to buy a new refrig. Would like a side-by-side with ice maker and water dispenser. I don't really need anything over 25 cubic feet, however when I remodeled my kitchen I left room for a 36" wide refrig. Can anyone recommend a good brand name? Maybe a closeout item may be the answer, because it seems like the manufacture's are upgrading as we type. Who has the best warranty out there? As alway's your help is appreciated, sincerely, plumber Tom

** Can anyone recommend a good brand name? **

I'm not overly impressed with any of the domestically made SxS refrigerators although I haven't heard too much about Whirlpool's so that might be a manufacturer's product to look at?

** Who has the best warranty out there? **

Frigidaire used to have a 10 year 'sealed system' warranty on the fridge's and freezers, I don't know if they still do. BTW. That was only on their "Frigidaire" branded products and not on any of the other brand names they sell under (see the following link).

** with ice maker and water dispenser. **

More things to break down IMO and often expensive to repair when they do. Many of the manufacturers have had problems with the electronics (big surprise?) used in their 'through the door' dispenser mechanisms requiring modifications or field upgrades. I don't know if all the shortcomings have been corrected in currently available models.

BTW. You can also look forward to purchasing a replacement refrigerator water filter 2-3 times a year for the lifetime of the product (+$$$).

Thanks danO for the info. My fridge now is too small and I want to upgrade to something more modern with added features. I will look into the WHIRLPOOLS. Thanks again, plumber Tom

PlumberTom, are you stuck on SXS already or are you open to suggestions on that? I have a SXS and I don't love it. It seems the freezer is not wide enough. It's so deep that you have to pull everything out to get to the stuff in the back. The frig isn't so bad because you can scoot stuff around instead of pulling it out.

Have you looked at the freezer on the bottom models? My mother has one of those and loves it.

Good luck,

Hi there Tom,

Do you have Costco where you live? We actually bought ours online and they delivered it; even hauled off the old one. It's a 25-sq-ft "Kirkland Signature" branded Whirlpool (36" wide). Nothing fancy, but it's "Energy Star" rated and has a 2 year warranty; also has the filtered water. We've been happy with it, and the price was right.

We bought this one 1 year ago after our last one was fried by a power surge. It was "only" 14 years old (I'd been hoping to get at least 30 years out of it!

We use our Costco membership quite a bit--this helps make it worthwhile. Site is if you'd like to see what they have.

Good luck,

Thanks Devildog and k2 for your input. Nope Devildog, haven't bought one yet, but will certainly check out your suggestions. My grandmother had the freezer on the bottom YEARS ago, so I spose the general design feature hasn't changed. What appealed to me was the modern new features on the SxS such as the ice and water dispenser. Kenmore closes their models out around $800.00. That's as much as I'd like to spend. K2 I am a member of Sam's Club, which is basically a glorified Wall-Mart. I will check out what they have as well. It just seems after a food order you have to re-arrange everything! 24 to 25 cubic feet will much better suit my needs. Thanks again, plumber Tom
