Is this correct--

If a homeowner who previously had a gas dryer opted to get an electric dryer, is it just that the gas line would have to be shut off at where it used to connect to the old dryer, and then the homeowner could just plug the electric dryer in and use it?

My sister's dryer died, and in the local paper people are often selling both gas and electric dryers. She will purchase one, but wants to make sure she can safely operate an electric one if her previous dryer was gas.

Is gasline shut-off something best left to a "professional" or can a homeowner undertake this? Please advise. Thank you.

Hi,

**If a homeowner who previously had a gas dryer opted to get an electric dryer, is it just that the gas line would have to be shut off at where it used to connect to the old dryer**

Yes the gas would have to be shut off for that line and the line capped or plugged at the dryer end.

**and then the homeowner could just plug the electric dryer in and use it?**

Not unless they already have a 220 volt line for an electric dryer, the gas dryer uses a 120 volt plug ( like the washer or your toaster ) and an electric dryer is a much bigger type of an plug. The vent can be reused for an electric dryer.

**My sister's dryer died, and in the local paper people are often selling both gas and electric dryers. She will purchase one, but wants to make sure she can safely operate an electric one if her previous dryer was gas**

An electric dryer will only work if she has an electrical line for an electric dryer there or someone would have to run a new line for the electric dryer.

**Is gasline shut-off something best left to a "professional" or can a homeowner undertake this?**

Usually best to have it done by a gas fitter, but in your own home you are allowed to do this yourself.....but you take the responsibility if anything happens!
