Does anyone know what to do about a clogged garbage disposal? Apparently it did not like the celery I put down it. Any advice?

Hi,

Might get lucky...remove power and reach down inside to see how much can be removed.

May need to disconnect the unit and remove it totally to clean the disposal or plumbing out.

**Apparently it did not like the celery I put down it.**

Anything stringy is usually a nono.

Link has a couple of "how to install" a food waste disposal, reverse may help you remove yours if needed.

Hi Teach! Are you saying that the disposal does not work when you turn on the switch? Or are you saying water is backing up into your sink after the celery episode? If the latter, you will have to have your drain augered. Don't put celery in your drains. You may as well dump yarn in there. If the former, does the unit make a humming noise when switched on? Then it is jammed and needs to be cleaned and backed up a bit with a broom handle. If there is no noise, then it may be burnt out or the breaker or fuse was affected. Whatever you do, unplug the unit first if possible or shut it off at the fuse box. Not a pro, just a handyman.

Thanks to Appliguy and Handy Man. It did grind, but nothing went down (for several hours). I took it off, cleaned out the pipes, and the unit itself, but do not have the strength, agility or expertise to put it back on. Three little "lips" and three little "hooks" are supposed to match up on the "cuff" around the disposal mouth, and I just can't manage it. So thanks and I will never, ever put celery in it again.

G'day,

Maybe try a car jack to hold it there for you....or I have also built up a platform with a box and some books to hold the unit up while I manipulate the holder into place....might help :)
