My fiance and I live in an apartment complex for the past month we have been trying to get them to fix our air conditioner. We turn the thermastate and only the fan comes on not the ac. The maintance man has changed the filters twice they have put new free on in it and keep telling us that its fixed but the only thing that keeps happening is the fan comes on and thats it it just keeps circulating the same temperature air. What could possibly be wrong? My fiance has congestive heart failure and if it gets too hot he will have to go to the hospital. We need an idea for them to try out on it we have to get this fixed before it gets hot which is really soon. Thank you for your help....

Okay you have a LUX brand thermostat. You have what you call central A/C in an apartment. The maintenance men have charged something with freon and changed air filters twice. Where is this mysterious Air Conditioner unit, and is it even ON yet? IF you saw them put in freon, somewhere where they did that, should be this Unit that you need to look at to find out the manufacturer. The thermostat is not a reliable source of information for what kind of unit you have.
Okay, a central unit for A/C for the entire building? or one dedicated to your unit? What kind of heat do you have? Perhaps you have a combo system in your building that is water piped, that runs hot water in the pipes and your fan unit blows on it to produce heat in the winter, and in the summer they conditon the water with a big cooling tower and condenser unit and that same fan blows on those same pipes to give you cooler but NOT de-humidified air in the summer? I suggest you ask your "maintenance" people to show you where this A/C unit is, ask IF its specific to your apartment, and explain what kind of "air conditioning" or "AIR COOLING" system you have (different systems both use freon). We can't help you with the limited information you have supplied here so far.
You're not responsible for the mainenance/repair of this system, apparently (since maintainence men have been sent to you on more than one occasion), and you're tinkering with it could get you in trouble with the property owner/management anyway. I think your best route might be to discuss your concerns with them. Good luck, and post again and let us know what you found out.
