Kenmore Model 790.95201102

Serial: VF22611087

I just moved into my place and was fortunate enough to inherit this fine contraption.

I am having problems with the Bake and Broil settings. When you press bake and set the temperature, the top element glows red, not the bottom.

When you hit broil and set it to high, the bottom element glows red.

Isn't that the reverse way it should work?

We noticed it after cooking several things and the top was black but the bottom was barely cooked.

We have only been here a week and have already "accidentally" broke the ceramic cook top which is setting us back $220 just for the part, and if something else needs replaced / repaired I may just want to get a new unit.

What would you do? Any suggestions?

During bake, the initial pre-heat will usually have both bake (bottom) and broil (top oven) elements on at the same time. Once it reaches the proper temperature (or close to it), just the bake element will usually cycle on and off to maintain temperature. On broil, just the top oven element will usually function.

If the oven is acting exactly in reverse, maybe it was service previously and someone just mixed up the wiring on the control for the bake and broil elements? I can't think of anything else which would cause it.

Someone would need to check the current wiring against the range's wiring diagram.

Yes, the glass top can be expensive to replace. A replacement is available *slightly* cheaper than that at the following link:

Well last night when I turned it on to make sure it was working the way I said, it caught on fire (small fire).

We are buying a new one now. Thanks for your help!
