The Product:

I have a Kenmore (Whirlpool) 110.26942500.

The Symptom:

This afternoon, it started to make a loud buzzing noise, like when a torque sensitive drill disengages. This is shortly after it reached the spin cycle. The washer is still full of water.

My Tests:

I've tested the agitator, which appears to work fine. The door switch also functions. After agitation, the washer will attempt to spin, but will fail. It will be two to three seconds before it starts to make the buzzing again, and a small amount of water will come out of the drain pipe. If I don't agitate first, it buzzes immediately and no water comes out.

Other Notes:

The basket turns counter-clockwise with mild resistance when turned by hand, but when released it will slowly spin back to its original position. The basket doesn't spin clockwise at all. I don't know if this is normal or not.

Questions:

1. How do I drain the water from the basket?

2. What additional tests should I do and is the problem obvious to any of you?

Thanks for you help.

The washer has to drain *before* it will be able to spin. If it wasn't, it could cause the motor to overheat and cut out on its internal overload protector. Maybe the pump or one of the internal hoses are plugged??

** 1. How do I drain the water from the basket? **

If you have a floor drain, setting the drain hose on the floor will cause it to drain by gravity... provided there is not blockages in the internal or external drain hoses or pump. If you have or get a 'wet vac', it could probably be used as well. You might also be able to syphon the water out into buckets on the floor. Other than those, using a small bucket or large cup by hand may be required.
