I ended up taking off the top of my maytag and popping off the rim of the drum and scraping a layer of soap scum goo from just above the max water line. That area probably doesn't always get submerged so soap builds up easily. There was also soap scum under the fabric softener cup. stinky.

I probably have some under the Agitator, but I am scared to break the seal in the bottom of the tub.
