New Kitchen, purchased a 48" gas cooktop, I want to put a 30" over the range microwave centered over the cooktop. Kitchen cabinet lady told me I would be against code. Is this true? Would it be OK if the cooktop was downdraft? Microwave has lights and a 300cfm fan with filters. Microwave would be attached to bottom of cabinets.

I don't see why it would be but you should check with a *local* home inspector or the local authorities.

You probably could *NOT* but any sort of cabinets beside the microwave though, to fill in the extra space. Cabinets I'm sure have to be further away from the cooking surface than the microwave hood can be but again, check with a local building inspector.
