My dryer does not continue to heat up after the initial start up. Once the start button is pushed the dryer starts and the hating coil gets orange and the gas starts and the dryer heats up. Once the gas is ignited the coil is no longer orange. After that the dryer gets to temperature the gas shuts off. Once the dryer calls for heat again the coil turns orange but the gas flame does not come on. I have taken off the front panel and observed this many times. I also installed the door without the front panel on to make sure that it was an enclosed environment. The venting is not the problem as I have taken it apart and throughly checked it for blockage. I am very capable of replacing any part myself so your help in determining which part is not working properly would be appreciated. Thanks

** Maytag Neptune [gas] Dryer **

Maytag has several different models of "Neptune" named dryers on the market. The only way we can find out which one you're dealing with is if you post its complete model number.

You can find tips for locating the model number identification tag on your appliances in the 'Repair Parts' section of my web site linked below.

** Once the dryer calls for heat again the coil turns orange but the gas flame does not come on. **

What happens with the ignitor at that time? Does it stay lit continually or does it cycle on and off???

The model number is MDG5500AWW and the serial number is 42768005AR.

After the initial warm up the gas shuts off until it is called for again. when the heat is called for again the igniter stays lit for a while say 5-6 seconds waiting for the gas to ignite but the gas never comes on. Flow of gas doesn't seem to be the problem. thanks.

** the igniter stays lit for a while say 5-6 seconds **

So it is not staying on continually but actually cycling on and off.

That symptom is most often caused by defective gas valve solenoid coils (see the link below) on the gas valve, opening up prematurely.
