** whirlpool dryer for about 2 1/2 yrs. **

I'm afraid that does not help to identify the appliance in question. What is needed is its complete model number.

You can find tips for locating the model number identification tag on your appliances in the 'Repair Parts' section of my web site linked below.

** recently it has started making a grinding noise **

Someone will likely need to look into it to try to isolate the source. Common places could include the drum rollers, drum bearings (if used on whatever model you have), worn drum seals, a worn idler (belt tension) pulley, broken blower fan or something caught in the unit somewhere.

** it smells like smoke when you open it. **

Maybe some lint inside the dryer is burning? If there's a problem with the blower fan, the element could be getting hotter than it should otherwise.

** the model number is LER4634JQ1 **

That model has all those things I mentioned above. Each would have to be inspected to see if they're the possible cause of the sounds.

** in your opinion should we just purchase a new one? **

Without even bothering to investigate the symptoms? No!

Clothes dryers seldom require so expensive repairs that replacing them is justified... unless continued to be used while experiencing problems which leads to more expensive damage. If repaired in a timely fashion and not 'run into the ground', a dryer can last for decades.

I suggest use of the dryer be discontinued until it can be looked into and corrected.

BTW. Your dryer model is one of Whirlpool's better designs. I suggest you try to hang onto it as long as you can.
