I have a Kenmore Ultra Diswasher, (portable) that is approx, 10 years old. Recently it has started leaving a white film on the dishes. It is really noticable on the glasses. I believe the dishwasher is heating properly, and we are not using to much soap as we use the premade cubes. We have to literally hand wash and scrub this film off. If it helps, we are on a well, and have a Kenmore water softener as well. While I am not too skilled at repairs, I really can afford another repair man to come out and will take a shot at fixing it, if I knew what to fix. Any ideas?

** Recently it has started leaving a white film on the dishes. **

Not on glasses??

** I believe the dishwasher is heating properly **

More important is the temperature of its incoming water. What temperature is it?

** we use the pre-made cubes... and have a Kenmore water softener as well. **

You should NOT be using any detergent that also contains a rinse agent (like detergent 'tabs' do). A rinse agent shouldn't be necessary in already soft water as that is all it does, soften the water.

You should also be using *considerably* less detergent in soft water than is necessary in normal. For soft water (0-3 grains of hardness) 3 tsp. or less of detergent is only needed! You can not adjust the amount of detergent when using tabs.

** Model #665 **

BTW. 665 is only the very first part of a model number. Not that we need it for you current complaint but usually we would need its complete information which will only be found on the appliance's model and serial number identification tag, right on the appliance.

Sorry for the confusion, the film is on everything, it is really noticable on the glasses, and silverware. As for the temperature of the water it is whatever the hot water tank is preset at, we have never changed the settings. I was not aware that we needed to use less detergent with the water softener. Is is necessary to use items like "Jet Dry"? And the complete model number, is 665-17792990, serial number fj3202880. Hope this helps, and thanks for the quick reply, I tried another web site that promises help as well and after two weeks there is still no response.

Great. What does that happen to be *exactly*???

Maybe stick a thermometer under the hot water tap?

That is a rinse agent. If you have soft water, it should not be necessary and could lead to other problems with the dishwasher (filming NOT one of them).

** the film is on everything, it is really noticeable on the glasses, and silverware **

Try soaking a part of an affected glass in undiluted white vinegar for 5 minutes, rinse and then dry, to see if the filming is removed. If it isn't, try holding the glass up to a light to see if a rainbow effect in the light is present.

** after two weeks there was still no response. **

Most problems are caused by usage issues. It is difficult to diagnose them 'over the phone' and almost impossible without getting detailed and accurate information to go on.

It seems the problem was related to our water softener. There were two issues with it. One we had inadvertently let the softener run completely out of salt. The second issue was the drain tube for the softener had become plugged outside and the waste water was backing up into the unit. Added salt, unplugged the tube and the dishwasher is once again functioning properly.

Glad to hear it, thanks for the follow up.

Remember, NO rinse agent or detergents that contain a rinse agent, should be used in already soft water.

I have a problem with the above model dishwasher in that the Quick Rinse red light on the touch panel stays lit and the unit will not start. Serial No. FK 4402326.
I don't know how old it is but we have lived in this house for 7 years. Thank you.
