** Whirlpool Washer Model number LSR7233DQ1 **
That is one of Whirlpool's 'direct drive' washer designs.
** won't agitate or spin [but] drains. Would it be the drive motor? **
No. The pump is attached onto the motor. If the motor wasn't working, neither would the pump. It sounds like the motor coupler has likely failed. You can read about that repair job and see the drive coupler at the following links:

I have the same washer with the same problem (I think). At first I thought it was the timer because I couldn't feel the detentes in the cycles, however as I move the dial around, the washer drains at any spin location. It hums in most cycles and seems to want to spin (I can hear the motor) and jolts a little then stops. Does this sound like the same issue?
Forgot to ask; should I be able to spin the agitator by hand at all? I cannot so I wonder if this says anything about the linkage?
** there are 2 diff kinds of part old/new can you use newer on both? **
The current design of motor coupler is all that is available and replaces all previous versions of that part.
