I have heard before that a washing machine pump could pump the water up to a drain to a height of 10 feet without any assistance .Is this true?

Not usually, check the machine's owner's manual or with the manufacturer. Some models might have a 'high volumn' pump available for them which can be added when necessary for specific drain conditions.

6 feet might be a more realistic maximum drain height for most washers but even then you have to consider that once the pump stops, the water remaining in that 6 feet of hose will fall back into the machine and remain there until the next use. That would not be an ideal condition.
