Hi! I was wondering if anyone could help me with my kenmore 80 series washer # 110.24892300....I had it for about 4 years..it's a great washer but recently it has been making a weird noise...not clicking, not grinding but like a loud humming or high pitch sound..it doesn't always do it either.. Everything else seems like it's working....After reading on the internet I found a few answers but not sure...someone mentioned gearbox, does that sound right? If so how much does it usually cost? Any help would be appreciated...:)

** recently it has been making a weird noise... like a loud humming or high pitch sound. **

While performing what function (eg. fill, agitate, drain, spin, ect.)?

From which exact component(s) of the machine?

Someone will likely need to isolate the actual source before we can suggest possibilities for it.

** someone mentioned gearbox, does that sound right? **

That could be one of many possibilities. I suggest you not jump to conclusions but actually look into its origin instead. Once found we may be able to suggest a course of action.

The sound is only there when it agitates and when I watch it, it doesnt seem to ge moving all that much but I don't know what to compare it to....Is the agitator really suppose to move alot or just a little??..I know it goes back and forth........as for the source of the noise its really hard to say.....It just loud and annoying...I am going to get my husband to look at it tomorrow to get more info for you...thanks alot for the quick reply...greatly appreciated..:)

** The sound is only there when it agitates **

That could be caused by the agitator base slipping on the transmission shaft, something caught between it and the tub or even a problem inside the transmission. If it is just the top half of the agitator which is not moving, a problem with the mating drive 'dogs' (see the following link) may be a possibility.

** .Is the agitator really suppose to move a lot or just a little?? **

Maybe 2-3 inches each stroke. It should be noticeable for sure.

We took the agitator apart and sure enough the dogs(I think they are called that) are done....there was little white filings(white powder) when we took that apart...So I ordered new ones, should be getting them today.....Hopefully its just that then we will go from there...

thanks

So it was just the top half of the agitator not working that was your complaint? No problem with the lower half?

Let us know how you make out.

Well, we changed the "dogs" and tried a load....was working fine during the first agitation but the second agitation came and the noise is back...the agitator is working a whole lot better..what a difference! It looks like the bottom part is working but still can't tell where the noise is coming from....it's just loud....I checked to see if my warranty was up and sure enough it finished in Dec on gear case parts...hopefully it's not that...What else could it be?? any suggestions? Thanks for all your help so far..greatly appreciated
