i have a direct drive model #110.28812790 washer that will not drain. It would drain and enter spin cycle a few times, by shutting the unit off for 20 minutes. now it will not drain at all, thus not letting it enter spin cycle. What would be causing this?

Whether it drains has nothing to do whether it goes into spin or not. It just wouldn't spin well still being full of water.
So is your complain just that the timer stops advancing right where drain should take place and never moves on from there?

for a couple days it wouldnt drain or spin unless we let it sit off for 20 mins. it sounded like it wanted to engage but wouldnt. after letting it sit off, then turning the machine back on, it would drain and spin. now it still makes the sound like it wants to engage but will not drain or spin, even after letting it sit off.
> What is the machine's timer doing at that time?
Does the timer 'stick' right where the draining should be occurring or does it continue moving to the end of the cycle as if the machine was working properly?

once it reaches spin cycle, it makes a buzzing/humming noise, at which point we shut it off. Did not want to inflict further damage. I have not let it continue advancing after hearing this noise. Thought it would start draining, once it reached spin cycle.
If the timer is stopping right at the point where draining should take place and never moves on, a problem in the lid switch is likely.

I had the same problem with my Kenmore in the past. I had to hire a Dallas handyman to fix it for me because I'm not good at repairing stuff. That is one of the reasons I'm glad I joined this forum.
