How hot is too hot for the outside of a dryer? I have a 10 yr old maytag performa gas dryer. I just had the vent system cleaned and the appliance repairman cleaned massive amounts of lint from the area in front of the blower wheel. The outside of the dryer in front of the blower wheel is still measuring above 107* with my inferred thermometer. I say its too hot, repairman says its normal. This is on the low setting after just a few minutes with a load of wet clothes and the rest of the dryer is cool. I called Maytag but they said the question was "too technical."

Sorry but I've never tested the cabinet temperature of a properly functioning dryer during use. If there was a problem with the dryer's heating, it would often be observed at the top of the cabinet (since heat rises) or in clothing being too hot.

I can tell you that the side panels of a kitchen range are allowed to be up to 152°F (67°C) and still be within legal limits.

Thanks DanO, that's a great comparison. I don't think its hotter then that and the top is no longer hot after having the vent cleaned and the proper vent kit installed on the back of the dryer. Just a tip to anyone else needing to clean their vent - check the wheel blower (squirel cage) assembly for lint as well. Ours was completely packed with lint. Its easy to do yourself and now that I know how I'll save an $80 repair bill every year or so. I've had my vent cleaned periodically and no one ever brought this up. With my dryer's design typical cleaning will never get that lint out of that area.
