I have an older model Kenmore refridgerator with the freezer on top that will run for a little while and then stop. An appliance repairman replaced the defrost timer and it came on only to shut off some time later after he was gone. Whenever I turn the temperature control to off and then back on it will kick in and run for a little while and then kick back off. the lights are working but it will not stay running in order to cool and freeze. Any idea what the problem would be? I'd rather fix myself than call a repairman out again.

I'm afraid that is not enough information to identify the appliance in question. What is needed is its exact model number. If you post it we can look it up to see what appliance design you're dealing with.

You can find tips for locating the model and serial number identification tag on your appliances at the following link:

When it stops, what happens by just tapping the control dial with a finger instead of actually adjusting the knob??

BTW. Once the compressor shuts down it should be left OFF for 10-15 minutes before trying to restart it again. The gas pressures inside the refrigeration system need a chance to equalize before the compressor will start up again without putting too much strain on it. Otherwise the compressor could be damaged by forcing it to restart too soon after shutdown.

Model # 2539305780

No problem with leaving it off for 15 minutes or more. This refridgerator is a second and located downstairs in my home therefore not checked on too frequently. It's usually several hours between the time I try to re-start.

Let us know the results of the 'tapping the control knob' test. We might be able to suggest a possible cause and corrective measure.
