My top-load GE washer (14 yrs old) leaks at bottom (1-2 cups of water). The basket spins during agitation cycle. Is it something fixable by oneself or worth fixing? If it is, please advise.

Dan, you helped solving an evaporator fan problem last weekend. This weekend the washer acted up, presumably becasue they have both reached the problematic age. Many thanks. Jim

** top-load GE washer (14 yrs old) **

I'm afraid that is not enough information to identify the appliance in question. What is needed is its exact model number. If you post it we can look it up to see what appliance design you're dealing with.

You can find tips for locating the model and serial number identification tag on your appliances at the following link:

BTW. It's always best to supply that information 'up front' when posting to save time.

** washer leaks at bottom. The basket spins during agitation **

Spinning during agitation can cause 'whirlpooling' leading to overflowing out the top of the tub and then eventually down. If yours is one of GE's newer washer designs, spinning while agitating can be caused by a 'slipping' transmission brake.

** Is it something fixable by oneself or worth fixing? **

On the machine design I'm referring to it would require replacement of the transmission or just the brake, both of which are fairly big jobs. A whole transmission is likely fairly expensive as well if it was necessary to go that route.

It is GE Model: WMSR2100T.

Also, three of the four rubber cords that suspend the basket and outer drum at the top are broken (but I don't think it is the cause of basket spinning). Thanks.

That model number is incomplete by 3 digits. Did you get it right off the machine's identification tag?

In any case, all models starting like that are the 'new' GE washer design I was referring to. You can read about servicing it at the following link:

Those aren't very expensive:
