We would actually suggest sticking with a 12/12 replacement wood window instead of switching to a 6/6 vinyl window. Yes, the wood windows cost more, but in terms of maintaining the home's scale and integrity, there is no substitution. Choosing 6/6 windows would drastically change the appearance of the front elevation, by creating a pane size that does not conform to the traditional style. If cost really is the main issue, shop around. Wood looks much nicer, but the main issue is the light division. Stick with the 12/12 in a material you can afford.
