I want to knock out a wall downstairs that is perpendicular to the floor joists of the upper level. The span is approximately 17 feet. Can someone help me figure out the beam size needed to support this distance. I would prefer to have to support beams on the edges of the beam rather than center support. Thank you.

It would be irresponsible for one of us to make a suggestion without more information, or even seeing the wall structure. What is below the wall to be removed, slab? beam? To take 17 feet of structure and transfer the weight to two bearing points, rather than distributing the weight along the span may require foundation reinforcement as well as properly sizing the beam. The beam size itself would be sized according to the weight bearing on it. We don't know the loads. Single or more stories, span of joists above, or use.
A structural decision like this is too important to rely on internet advice. While we have good people here, you need a competent engineer to review / draft your plans. It will be a fraction of the total project cost, but could prevent severe damage as well as provide important project sequencing information to you.
