From an aesthetic point of view should the roof pitch of a dormer match the pitch of the main roof? In my case, this means that my dormer will be very narrow - a lower pitch on the dormer will allow for a wider dormer but will it look OK? I have looked at every dormer I can and have not seen any with different pitches. Is there a reason for this?

This is fairly common. There is no hard and set rule. The variables include your concern, distance back from eave and up to ridge, width dneeded and overall proportions.
