I would like to know about reinforcing a house for hurricanes. I live about 30 miles north of Gulfpirt MA, and while it is not on the beach, you still might loose the roof. Anyone know any articles or something?

Most of the stuff I've found on the web is about storm windows. Since I'm still building I want to know ways to reinforce the roof trusses, or things like that. I heard of a way to make a shelter inside your home by reinforcing a closet with plywood, but I can't find any more about it. Any ideas?

Liz, give this a shot. Call your local TV station and see if they can help you. I think that they would know or a least be able to piont you is the right direction.

I found a group called the Institute for Building and Home Safety -- started by insurance folks to cut down on losses and injuries. They had a booklet you could print off with adobe on how to retrofit your home to prepare for a hurricane. Haven't really reviewed it personally, but there were other items that might be helpful too. Their main site is www.ibhs.ord -- The publication is about 1/2 way down on this page: http://www.ibhs.org/html/publications/Default.htm

... under the tornado section at that site (from Bearoness) -
You can get standard shelter designs from the Institute for Disaster Research at Texas Tech University. Box 41023, Lubbock, Tex. 79409-1033
They're free.
