Hi, I'm writing to see if anyone knows how to get bats out of my friends attic? They are everywhere. Her house smells like bat poo. I feel so sorry for them. I feel so helpless. So if anyone has a idea please return to this thread. Thank You so much!!!

Be carefull. Is some areas it's illegal to kill bats, or even prevent their entry into an existing habitation. The thought is that nesting bats may become trapped or separated from their young. That said...

I'd build a new bat house (plans available on the internet), then make their environment distaseful. Ultrasonics, chemical smells, etc. Once satisfied that the bats have evacuated, use aluminum insect screen over 1/4 galvanized hardware cloth to cover any entry points. Remember, bats can get into spaces less than 1/2".

The new bat house will then be a nice new neighborhood for them. Also, guano carries disease, have it removed prefessionally, you don't want to inhale its dust.

By the way. Bats are GREAT! They consume insects at an alarming rate.

In order to have bats sucessfully removed from unwanted places, you need to consider the season. Depending on your location, micro-bats form maternity colonies to raise their young. This colony consists of femals and the young pups. The season must be considered, because the proper removal includes the installation of one-way doors. Since bat pups can't fly, the one-way doors don't work during the maternity season. If they installed, you often drive the young bats from the walls/attic into your home!

Once you determine the correct time of year (avoid June and July in MI), you need to caulk all the cracks around your eves, chimney, roofline. Be careful not to seal areas where bats are currently gaining access. These locations require a one way door to let them out.

Since proper bat removal requires working high off the ground, safety must be considered.

Consider the risks and your knowledge of bat behavior before starting any bat removal project.

To get bats out of your firend home starts with an inspection of the exterior. You need to identify places where bats are getting inside the attic. Typically, this is around the chimney, eves, gable vents, or even ridge vents. Next you can purchase one way doors to install. Finally, you need to caulk all the other areas were bats can enter (3/8 inch or larger).
