I am having crown molding put in my new home. My question is what angle should the crown molding be cut to put two boards together that are not on a corner. I have been taught to do it on a 45 angle and my builder wants to use a butt joint with glue. What is the best way to accomplish this task.
I've done both. The miter is easier to use because it conceals any small (and I do mean smaaaaall) errors in the cut, but the butt joint is OK, particularly if it can be strengthened by using biscuits and blue. If the crown is solid wood, you may have some shrink and swell so whatever method you use, make sure the joint is solid.
