Since the majority of the foundation problems involve water in one way or another, would it be effective to build a "foundation awning" of sorts? This "awning" would be installed during the backfill stage, and would be secured high on the basement wall, sloping away from the wall, and would extend down to below the footing level. This barrier would be sandwiched between the layers of fill and would need to be both flexible and waterproof, and be done as an added layer of protection with the waterproofing treatment that is done to the outside of the bare wall.
