At work we have RJ45 phone jacks. Is there an adaptor available so I can plug an RJ11 connector in?

An RJ-11 plug will fit in an RJ-45 jack. Just make sure you aren't plugging an analog device into a digital jack, as the previous poster mentioned.

Actually, it's the line voltage that burns out modems when plugged into an RJ-45 by accident. It used to happen more often when plugging RJ-11 jacks into RJ-11 PBX plugs, but now most modems have protectors for that.

The line voltage carried for Ethernet over an RJ-45 is much higher and can fry most modems. Fortunately, the standard RJ-11 is a two pair connector, while the RJ-45 is a 4 pair. If you plug an RJ-11 into an RJ-45 plug it will most like make contact with pins 3,4,5, and 6. The voltage for Ethernet is carried on the transmit wires on pins 1 & 2. So the chanceas are you won't accidently fry anything. Not to say that you can't, but you probably won't.

Forgot to actually answer your question. The answer is you that you should be able to use it just fine without any adapters. Where it really matters is how the patch panel or central cross-connect is wired. Keep the phones and the network connections seperate.

RJ-11 and RJ45 are 2 completely different things. RJ11 is just standard everyday phone cord. RJ45 is for ethernet which is a computer cord used for networking computers and cable modems and the like, it has nothing to do with digital analog or other. It is completely different
