I am refinishing my basement and plan to drywall the ceiling. I have ductwork running through the middle of the room beneath the joists, and there is a structural support beam running parallel to one side of the ductwork. I need to attach some sort of board to the other side so I can drywall around the duct. Can anyone offer any helpful hints, do's and don'ts and/or how to's? After the second board is installed, will I need to add furring strips that run perpendicular to these? Thanks in advance.

Yes you'll need to think about fireblocking... I answered a similar question a while back and have left the details on my sites forum... go there and you can print out the plan.
