I plan to install recess lighting in a 14'x17' family room with 8 foot ceilings. I figured 6 lights spaced 6-7' apart centered in the room. Would that provide enough light or should I go with 8 lights? Also, should I use 4 or 6-inch cans? Thanks.

You will have uneven lighting in the room. You should either add some other lamps in the room, or go with another type of ceiling lighting. "Can" lights that are 6 or 7 feet apart will not provide even lighting from an 8-foot ceiling.

Can lights can provide the coverage that you're looking for, but you would have to purchase high performance fixtures, with optics optimized for an A19 lamp (regular light bulb) or horizontal compact fluorescent.

See if you can go 5 feet on center, and use A lamp or REFLECTOR (not PAR) lamps for softer light.
