I like the halogen lights because they're whiter than the old incandescent bulbs. But don't these halogen bulbs burn a lot hotter, and therefore pose more of a fire hazard?
Those halogens sure do burn a heck of a lot hotter. Make sure the fixtures you put them in are rated for that heat. Floor lamps should have a tip switch to shut them off if they fall over, that has been a big cause for a lot of fires.
