I am finishing a basement and installing a bar under the hvac trunkline. I have limited room from the drywall covering the hvac trunkline to the bar top, about 2 1/2 to 3 feet.
I want to install lights above the bar but am very limited to what I can do because under the drywall is a 2x3 lumber laid flat. In other words I only have 2 inches to sink a fixture into my ceiling.
Can I recess puck lighting into the drywall above my bar? It seems that puck lights are not designed for ceilings but I haven't heard that they can't be used.

I don't think you have enough clearance from a combustable material to install these lights. Find a manufacturer and pose this question to them. They may have a suitable solution for you. You could also ask to see a set of instructions for installation at a store.
Have you considered low voltage pendant lights with those slim lined decorative glass shades. They are very much in style right now and may suit your needs even better. Most are field cuttable so you can acheive any length you desire. just a thought.
