Does anyone know what type of tool works best for this? I've been told a pipecutter or a hacksaw. Pipecutters are a bit pricey and hacksaws seem like an awful lot of work.

Dear WOAM,
You can buy a Sawzall reciprocating saw for $ 100.00 or so that will do the job and save it for later projects. The saw is versatile and durable.

If you plan ahead and do all your measuring in advance, you can then go rent a pipe cutter (or other tool) for 1/2-day and not spend a fortune doing it. You can make your cuts and then return the tool to the rental place.

I had a steel fence post between two garages. There was only room to stand sideways. I used a dremel while balancing on one foot. Slightly acrobatic, but it did the job!!!
