I am considreing picking up a 12 volt Dewalt, but am also considering the 14.4 volt. The drill will be used for light to medium work. (the heavy work gets done with a corded drill)

Are the extra 2.4 volts worth the extra money or are the two practicaly the same as far as run time, torque, etc?

to answer your question i actually need a few more specifics about which peticular models you are looking at but I can shed a little light on the differences between DeWalt's most popular models...

first off you need to know that DeWalt has two different lines of cordless drills...there is the compact series and the XRP series...the main differences between the two lines are the following features:

compact series will be slightly smaller making it easier to get into very tight spaces...it is also about 1-1/2 lb lighter than the xrp...it has a 3/8" chuck...and the standard series batteries...and high/low speed settings...

the XRP series is slighty longer and heavier...it has a 1/2" chuck..and comes with the XR+ series batteries which give aprox 45% longer run time than the standard series in the same voltage...the XRP series drills also come with a three speed transmission

now to give you some specs on the torque of these drills

12v Compact = 300 in./lb torque
12v XRP = 350 in./lb torque
14.4v Compact = 350 in./lb torque
14.4v XRP = 400 in./lb torque

i've been selling tools for about twoo years now so if you have any furthur questions feel free to give me a holler

I read in the JLC forums that Dewalt is moving to Mexico & laying off a substantial # of workers. I prefer to buy made in the USA. keep your friends & relatives working.
