any tips? im guessing you just keep squeezing till the rod part breaks off? (how do i get the metal rod thing to snap flush with the rivet head so it looks good (like they do on products you buy?)

ok i tried that and that works , thanks 
but the rod seems to break and still stick up a little past the "mushroom" part. am I doing something wrong or am I supposed to go back and clean it up later? (i was hoping for a cleaner result)

Make sure that when you release it you push the gun down onto the rivet. You want the rivet to be tight against the surface your riveting and also the rivet gun tight against the rivet. Practise with it until you get the hang of it, eventually you will get the feel of it and the rod will snap off just inside the rivet when you do it right.
