I am looking ot purchase a generator before winter and am looking for recommendations from anyone who would like to share them. I look at it as a lifetime investment in a backup power source. I was thinking of something in the 6-7 KW range, for less than $2000. Any suggestions?

For something that big, dependable for life, and under 2K?

I would look at Onan or Honda but the price might run a little over or you'll need to settle for smaller>5000w

12VMAN - hi, after going without electricity for over 12 days because of Hurricane Isabel, I'm also in the market. I've seen both Chicago Electric and Coleman Powermate generators in the 6-8 KW (peak) range for under $2K. The one I'm eyeing right now is a Coleman Powermate with 8.1KW (peak)/6.5KW (normal) output, 4 120V outlets and 1 240V outlet (twistlock), with wheel and handle kit, for $1300. I saw it at the Harbor Freight website ( I've seen earlier posts about the tools they offer, and as someone said, you may get what you pay for if you buy an off-brand. I've seen both makes of generators used in my area (Northern Neck of VA) by homeowners and at construction sites. I hope this helps some - regards! Jim D/Heathsville, VA
