Adam,
You could use school stationary (with letterhead) write to the following organizations requesting donations and explain your program:
1. Your local do-it-yourself builders supply (Lowe's, Menard's, Home Acres, Handy Andy, etc.).
2. Local nurseries
3. Local unions which represent the appropriate trade
4. Solicit the Knights of Columbus, Chamber of Commerce, Jaycees, Rotary Club, hardware stores, etc. for old, but still working tools and equipment that their members may have laying around the house.
5. Contact the newspaper and explain your situation -ask for suggestions.
Hope this helps,

Some have better luck next time around,
some don't, and some don't even try.
