We are planning a home in WV on a little knoll in a hollow. We have been told that the cost of a poured foundation would be prohibitive (we'd have to send to Pittsburgh or maybe Charleston for the people that do that) and most people use block. Two builders have told us that application of parging, asphalt and gravel backfill to a foundation wall is the standard method used to waterproof a basement. However, we are also being advised by an architect that this is only damp-proofing not waterproofing. We have been told that there are products that are considered to have waterproofing capabilities: Tuff-n-Dri and WR Grace's Bituthene. Has anyone else heard of these/used these? We don't really have neighbors to consult with about this.
