Has anyone heard of this term? My wife and I went to look at a house for sale this past weekend and the realtor warned us that the foundation had been "double poured". He then stated that "you may have to punch a couple of holes, throw in some bar and patch it up".

Any idea what he is talking about and if it should be of concern? The home is more than twenty years old and has survived two major earthquakes with no apparent problems.

The term "Double-Poured" means that the owners had problems with the foundation previously (maybe settling problems)and may have re-layed concrete over it, to level it out. When concrete is layed, you have to place steel bars (frame) under the concrete to diminish cracking, from settling. Also, when a large area is covered, you need to put metal strips every 50ft or so, to separate concrete sections, to give it room for expansion. I would suggest not purchasing the home, if this is the case.

I take it then, that it would be too costly (if possible at all) to repair/correct? I forgot to mention, and don't know if it makes a difference, but this isn't a slab foundation. It's a perimeter "step" foundation into the side of a hill (slight incline).
