I need to finish a project as dark as possible without going black. I have tried minwax ebony, I have tried dark walnut, I have tried a walnut jel stain using several coats. When I apply the jel stain it is dark enough, but then I have to wipe it off, making it too light. Is there a special recipe or something that I can do to get this project DARK. thanks

I'm far from a painter, but try ammonia it reacts with the tannens in the wood and may create the effect you are looking for?

Do it on a test piece, and maybe look it up on the web for further info... as I said I'm a carpenter not a painter, so

Whit..........

Try my favorite Dark Oak Finish....."Iron Oak"

It's a OLD chemical treatment coloring the wood.........It's Black but the grain shows thru.....check it out on some scrap.......

Start with a bucket......toss in junk steel and iron...Rusty!.....nails....... scrap.....anything.........

Next ADD a bottle of white vinegar.....and fill the bucket..........let stand a couple days....(hours?) and the solution will be ready...........

To use apply with a rag......or a brush........or dip the piece.........Allow to dry or wipe the solution off and then allow to dry..........Application/Strength/Time?.....Just depends on the look desired..........

WANT different solution ?...........

Crush a bottle full of IRON vitamin tables......disolve in water.........and use on the wood surface as before..........

Analine dyes workbest for this, but if you have already used an oil based stain, you probably wont be able to achieve what your looking for since the wood pores have probably sealed up.
