I amgoing to be building a 10" high block retaining wall in front of my house. The dirt that will go in the "planter" will be up against my aliminum siding (that has evidently been painted at least once). Any suggestions on if I should put something up against the siding befor loading the dirt in to protect the siding??

Soil piled up on the al siding will prevent water that gets behind the siding from draining out. The wall behing it will be come soaked and rot.
I agree. Not such a good idea. But if you had to do it, I would fill the area directly against the siding with some sort of crushed stone or gravel, the cover the stone with some plastic or geotextile fabric to prevent soil from leeching into it.
