clean what off them? Soot or something else?

I would first suggest going to a paint store to get some TSP to mix with water and scour it. use a strong mix and wear rubber gloves

Excellence is its own reward!

Try something called ChimneyRx Paint N Peel fireplace cleaner. It only works on soot and smoke stains though.
