Anyone have suggestions on how to clean accumulated smoke stains on a stone fireplace mantelpiece? This is from 40+ years of fireplace use. I'm not sure what type of stone it is. House built 1958 in WI; stone is sort of a pinkish color, maybe Lannon stone; someone else suggested maybe Tennessee limestone?
Is this a do-it-yourself project or best left to a professional? Thanks for any help.

When I purchased my house 3 years ago, I cleaned my native limestone fireplace with Krud Kutter, http://www.krudkutter.com/originalkk.html
It did a wonderful job of removing 20+ years of smoke from the stone. You can purchase it at Walmart, Sherwin-Williams, or your local paint supply store.
We also used nylon scrub brushes and toothbrushes to complete the job.
