Hi there - I have a condo in an old warehouse that has a brick wall on one side that runs 3 floors. On the 3rd floor only there are a few bricks that have a white colored flaky growth that crumbles when you touch it. Any idea what that is and if I should be getting rid of it?

Thanks

Mike

This is called efflorescence. mineral salts in masonry being washed to the surface to deposit or crystalize theree when moisture moves through the material.

Probably the wall needs to be sealed against moisture at the exterior or the roof abutting it is leaking, or with this being the top floor, there is some water vapour condensing in the brick from the interior environment

clean it off and control the moisture and there will be no more. You just need to determine the source of the moisture.

Excellence is its own reward!
