Why do some antique homes have the fireplaces filled in?

Many times it is because the chimney is no longer safe to use. Better building codes and safety regulations along with weather, age, and heat from extended use can cause a chimney to be unsafe for use. The easiest/cheapest solution in some cases is to fill in the fireplace.

Would the cost of fixing the chimneys add any resale value to the home?

The question is what would the difference be between the cost of repairing the chimney against the added resale value. Chimney repairs, especially in old home, can be very costly. The best way to make the final decision is to get a few estimates then weigh the cost against the value.
