Adhesive backed carpet residue on floor

We recently bought a home and pulled up adhesive backed carpeting to reveal hard wood floors in relatively good condition. In one room, however, pieces/section of the paper and adhesive remain. How can I remove it without removing the bulk of the finish on the floor (I'm not ready to refinish yet!)

Kim, did you ever come up with a soltion to getting the adhesive backing off the floors? I've got the same question, but our carpetting (indoor/outdoor) was glued to the front porch. I want to get back to the original concrete without wrecking thee whole porch! Thanks for any help.

HI, you can try "goof -off" (chemical name
xylene) but try first on inconspicuous place,
if that is too harsh try denatured alcohol.
