My husband and I are having a house built but the price of installing stained interior doors, baseboards and casings are beyond our budget. Would it look alright to have stained baseboards etc. on the main floor to complement our hardwood floors and fireplace and have the standard white painted baseboards etc. installed on the second floor? Our staircase will be solid oak with a carpet runner to match our upstairs carpeting and the second floor does not look out to the main floor at all.

Certainly!
In the old classic homes I work on, it was common to have the most highly detailed trim work in the formal rooms such as sitting room, grand hall, and living room or parlour. Secondary would be bedrooms. Kitchens and storage or attic level bedrooms were all for servants and recieved the most simple, basic treatments.

It is not uncommon in these house to find four trim styles.
