to some degree it depends what you are cleaning off and how bad it is. For a heavy layer of gunk, I have been known to use Turpentine, a rag, and lots of elbow grease - then a wax job. My wife cleans professionally and likes Murphy's Oil Soap.

For anything like this, you always want to try a spot in an inconspicuous place first, in case something goes not right
